Buxtehude bull

The "Buxtehude Bull" literature award for young people's books was initiated in 1971 by the Buxtehude bookseller Winfried Ziemann. By 1981 the Buxtehude town council authority had taken over sponsorship of the scheme. The award is presented annually for the best young people's narrative published in the German language.

Young people's books, published in German during the year in question, may participate in the competition.
Those young people' books from the company "Koch, Neff & Oetinger" listed under the heading "from 14 years to young adults" serve as the basis for selection. Individual applications from publishing houses and from individual authors may also be accepted.

A jury of 11 young readers (from 14 to 17 years old) and 11 adults determines the prizewinner. The jury is reconstituted every year. Applications to sit on the jury are divided, through the drawing lots, into 4 groups made up as follows: 7 young people and 7 adults who live in Buxtehude and 4 young people and 4 adults who have applied from outside the area.

The litarary prize of 5.000,00 € comes with a steel sculpture of a bull by the artist Reinhard Güthling. The name of the award stems from the peaceful bull Ferdinand of Munro Leaf Pate's book "The story of Ferdinand" first published in 1937.

It is the aim of the "Buxtehude bull" award to induce young people to read actively and intensively while at the same time contributing to the promotion and circulation of good quality books for young people.
